THE BUTTERFLY CIRCUS
An outstanding short film that says a lot. Every character and every scene has an inner thing to say. It conveys a lot about how people struggles through life and how they take every challenge that comes along. It perfectly describes a lot about what is really happening to most people. Hardships in life and heroisms that are often times unseen.
The development from a caterpillar to cocoon to a beautiful butterfly has a lot to relay. One time in our lives we became a caterpillar... slow, limited, unwanted and unworthy... sometimes considered as a pest in the society or environment we are in. But when the right time comes we turn into cocoons where we hibernate ourselves, absorbs all the stimulus from the environment around us but remained covered... covered with fear, helplessness and unwantedness until the time comes when we realize our worth and what our purpose is all about we turn to be a beautiful butterfly deliberated from all the unwanted things from the past and finally learn to accept ourselves considering our weaknesses and limitations and freely fly and dance to the wind and being adored by many.
We all have our purposes the only question is WHAT and WHY... Before you get to answer this WHEN comes along and from there you will get to understand what your existence is all about... Everything happens for a reason. Everything has its purpose. Our job is to discover and explore it within ourselves.
Every scene in THE BUTTERFLY CIRCUS has things to say. Sammy being the youngest character who is the son of the woman who played the ballerina in the butterfly circus is so innocent yet he is living luckily with people around him. Mr. Mendez is the master showman of the butterfly circus who serves a big role in the film. He is the eye opener of each individual, helping them out in making them realize their worth and how they can help themselves on their own. We all came across a Mr. Mendez in our lives. The only problem is most of us failed to notice it and failed to listen. He once quoted “this is what you believe in” he told this to Will who is the guy without legs and arms where in that is why he cant do much because he believes he is cursed from birth, a man whom God himself has turned his back upon. An unworthy man…but when he tends to realize that he isn’t that, that’s the time he begun accepting himself and discovering what his worth and what his purpose is all about. Mr. Mendez also quoted “the more you struggle, the more glorious...” is somewhat close to what the Bible also quoted that “when you are being persecuted, be happy for more blessings will come...”
At the early part of the film where they entered a Carnival show that just arrived in town, every personality has a story to tell. A fortune teller keeps saying “come and see rich and fortune to come...” It tells about people living in fortune telling and sort of related things where they rely their decisions and choices on what it says not on what they really want. There is also a man moving dolls with strings, this tells about people who has rely their decisions and choices to those above them. Those powerful than them that they don’t have confidence in making their own stand because they feel it will be a wrong thing to do. As they entered a side show of what they called “freaks” or those with abnormalities (abnormalities is basically said to be one when you came above or beyond the norm). Therefore, these are just judgments from the differences of you with the stimulus around you. The first woman has a grown beard some look at them amazed but most will see them funny, less fortunate, freaks. Second is the two ladies with half of their body attached, third is an overweight woman, fourth is the man with tattoos of places he has been to in his body and the star of the show whom all the shameful acts are on is for Will (the man with no arms and no legs) whom being introduced as the man cursed from birth, the man whom God himself has turned his back upon. In general, as they are being looked on you can see from their eyes what’s in their hearts. They are unhappy (except the tattooed man whom he chose to be like that). They feel cursed, full of self pity and madness... They all have questions... a lot actually but they have no voice to be heard by anyone...Their main question is WHY. In this scenario it is obvious that they are all taking it in a negative way that is why they end up there because they believed that this is where they should be.
Mr. Mendez is a gift to the story. He is the eye opener of those who are helpless. The beautiful ballerina who once a hooker sent out because of being pregnant and filled with cursing words and humiliation. She found her home with Mr. Mendez and the butterfly circus and accepted her sour past and faced tomorrow with head up high raising the boy who is the fruit from the past but never considered him as a liability. There is George the strongest man who once used his strength to beat up people and is very much violent. Until he learned to use the gift he has in a positive way with the help of Mr. Mendez and the butterfly circus. Same with poppy who is an old neglected man on the street feeling helpless waiting for his last days in this world to come still had its chances to self fulfillment. And it goes the same way with the others. Will who is the newest part of the team discovered what he can do by himself with only on thing on his mind “I can do it”
A very short film but will leave you a lot to remember. Scenes of how reality bites. But what we need is knowledge of acceptance and having our mind and hearts opened to what is in there for us. We must learn to accept and forgive our imperfections and look upon our gifts, nurture it and empower it to be a better person. Like the butterfly in the end we will see ourselves beautiful as it has ever been having peace of mind and feeling of freedom from ourselves and from the cruelty of the world.
"an average person's view is packed with all the reality of life, no one can offer..."
